Case Study #1: Multinational Group Risk Quotations

A blue-chip insurance company required the development of a multinational group risk life insurance quotation application.

The system was required to permit "What-If" analysis of Offerings, generation of multiple Quote versions in multiple languages and currencies based on a variety of input parameters, loadings and factors. The system was required to match the new line of business exactly, which was highly innovative in the structuring of Benefit Packages (standard packages, customisable packages, employee-purchased supplementary benefits, etc). The sheer volume of data alone - in the form of multinational customers (companies that have multiple geographically-spread subsidiaries, such as Pepsi Co) - could have proved challenge enough to manage and store, let alone implement the complex business logic.

Capturing and analysing functional requirements incrementally, and employing an equally incremental developmental cycle, a secure and scalable web-based application was developed using Java J2EE (JavaServer Pages, Servlets, JDBC), JavaServer Faces, web-standards compliant semantic-XHTML, CSS and Microsoft SQLServer 2000. The solution was deployed on IBM WebSphere 5.1 with IBM HTTP Server.

The project proved a great success, delivered within a realistic time-scale of 7 months for such a sophisticated n-tier enterprise application, utilising complex bespoke domain-specific business logic. While a complex database of over 100 tables was required, the Data Access Layer and Persistence Layer were high-performant and beyond the expectations of the client.

The delivery of this innovative solution has allowed the client to deliver a selection of new insurance products through a new arm of their business targeting multinational corporations.
