Case Study #2: Cash Reporting & Positions (CR&P)

The Equities Asset Management arm of a tier-1 investment bank required that a tool be developed, interfacing with existing technology, to assist the Portfolio Management team in analyzing account liability versus liquidity.

While maintaining continual communication with the client during the project life cycle, a web-based application was developed using Java J2EE (JavaServer Pages, Servlets, JDBC), Struts, XHTML, CSS and Sybase T-SQL. The application interfaced with the existing trade order management application and portfolio management application through the shared Sybase relational database.

The application permitted Portfolio Managers to assess whether a given portfolio would be short even when buying and selling holdings with a variety of settlement dates (e.g. Futures settling T+3 versus Equities settling T+1).

The application has proved invaluable to the business and their daily activities, permitting efficient management of portfolio holdings with considerably reduced risk of unintentional shorting. The solution is an excellent example of a relatively simple, yet innovative solution, that adds huge value to an existing business workflow.
