A web-based company extranet system was developed for a client that wished to distribute their technical documentation and licensed software releases in a secure and cost-effective manner. Their existing process involved posting these assets either via standard post or costly courier service.

The extranet provided a secure login mechanism; a range of configurable user privilege levels; bespoke user privilege interfaces (for example, Administrator versus Partner versus Employee); configurable user groups (for example, Companies or Clients) that have access to subsets of assets; a message board and auto-email facility to inform users of newly posted assets; and a full IT administration interface.

The system was developed using PHP5 and employed a MySQL database, providing a secure, easily maintained and cost-effective solution. This configuration is commonly referred to as LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP).

The delivered solution has proved a considerable success by removing the need to post or courier private documents and software releases, affording a cheaper, faster, more reliable and more secure solution, which - as a side-effect - has also helped enhance partner relations by creating a virtual exclusive club for "preferred partners".
